SC battle looms as CA favors ‘pulse billing’

After exhausting its legal remedies at the Court Appeals, the country’s telco behemoths are expected to take their fight against the six-second-per-pulse billing scheme being imposed by the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) to the Supreme Court.

In a decision dated Jan. 19, 2012, the CA’s former Special Eleventh Division of issued a resolution the denying the motion for reconsideration filed earlier by Smart Communications, Globe Telecom, Innove, and Connectivity Unlimited Resources Enterprises (Cure).

Internet-enabled devices ‘reshaping’ hardcopy industry

A new study by research firm IDC has revealed that the boom in Internet-enabled mobile devices (IEMDs) is reshaping the printing industry, offering new challenges and opportunities for hardcopy vendors.

After a flat trend in 2010, IDC said it expects home and office print volumes in Western Europe to slow down even further, declining at a CAGR of 0.6 percent from 2011 through 2015. The increasing popularity of IEMDs will contribute to this slow decline, IDC said.

MMDA mulls ‘robot traffic enforcer’

Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) chair Francis Tolentino has asked an award-winning team of young inventors to build a robot traffic enforcer that could detect traffic violators without human intervention.

The high school team from Dr. Yanga’s Colleges Inc. (DYCI) in Bocaue, Bulacan was a guest at the MMDA office this week.

Their invention, a robot named MAGIS, can detect floods, body temperature, and blood pressure among others. The robot had garnered for the team a fourth place award in the annual World Robot Olympiad held recently in Abu Dhabi.
