DOST to bring tech incubation services in provinces

The Technology Resource Center (TRC) of the Department of Science and Technology will soon give a wider range of support to countryside entrepreneurs with the establishment of its Community Technology Business Incubation program this year.

TRC Director Dennis Cunanan said the program, an offshoot of DOST’s Open Technology Business Incubation (Open TBI), will be implemented in partnership with the DOST regional offices.

A technology business incubator, or TBI, is a program that helps entrepreneurial companies and start-up businesses to take off and develop through the TBI’s array of business support resources and services.

Emerson signs up new distributor for PH

Energy equipment vendor Emerson Network Power announced that it has partnered with local distributor Bridge Distribution, which has extensive network of over 1,300 resellers in the Philippines.

Kelihos/Hlux botnet returns with new techniques

After a successful effort with Microsoft’s Digital Crimes Unit (DCU) last year to block the dangerous Kelihos/Hlux botnet that was responsible for a widespread spamming activity, security experts at anti-virus firm Kaspersky Lab have found that the botnet could still roam freely as long as the cybercriminals behind its operations are still at large.

Botnets are actually a collective of Internet-connected computers that are controlled by a single or a group of cybercriminals with the devious purpose of sending out spam to as many computers as possible. Botnets are also used for denial-of-service (DOS) on websites to slow or take down the website.

Accenture, PBSP conduct trainings for SMEs

The Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP) in partnership with Accenture and ABS-CBN Bayan Academy recently held a two-day training for BiD entrepreneurs.

Sixteen small and medium enterprises (SMEs) owners took part in the training held last November 28-29, 2011 in Manila to hone their abilities in self mastery and critical thinking.

They also went through series of lectures and workshops on market, operations, people, and financial assessment, and investing.

24 SUCs to integrate Oracle’s computer science curriculum

The Oracle Academy and the Department of Science and Technology – Information and Communications Technology Office (DOST-ICTO) have expanded their relationship to bring the Oracle Academy’s technology training program to 10,000 students over two years.

As part of the collaboration, 24 state universities and colleges will integrate the Oracle Academy’s Advanced Computer Science curriculum into their programs.

In addition, the Oracle Academy will provide software, technical support, and faculty professional development to the enrolled institutions. Faculty will receive discounts to attend training and students will receive discount vouchers for certification exams.

Ovum: Operators beginning to abandon unlimited data

Research firm Ovum said there is now solid evidence that leading operators in Asia-Pacific, the US, and Sweden are veering away from unlimited data tariffs for LTE due to traffic growth and management issues they generate.

“These operators are devising new ways to transition to LTE without continuing to offer burdensome unlimited tariffs. Experience is showing that the move to LTE without flat rates can be achieved with positive results,” Nicole McCormick, Ovum senior analyst telco strategy, said in a comment.

McCormick said the best method for the transition is to abandon unlimited tariffs from the launch of LTE.
