Viruses exploit social media news on Whitney Houston’s death

With the massive attention that Whitney Houston’s death has generated in cyberspace, an Internet security firm has sounded the alarm button on two Web threats which circulated shortly after the news of her demise broke out.

According to Trend Micro, its TrendLabs global R&D and technical support center found a “clickjacker” on Facebook and a suspicious link circulating on Twitter.

On Facebook, the post, which has the subject “I Cried watching this video. RIP Whitney Houston” came in the form of a wall post with a link to the supposed video.

Once users click on the video, it leads them to a Facebook page that contains a link to the video….



Globe ends 2011 with 30M subscribers, up 13% from 2010

Globe Telecom ended 2011 with over 30 million mobile phone subscribers, up by 13 percent from the previous year’s 26.47 million and 3-percent higher than the third quarter’s 29.1 million.

Globe maintained its dominance in the postpaid segment fueled by customizable plans and the launch of Apple iPhone 4S towards yearend, closing 2011 with nearly 1.5 million postpaid subscribers, 36 percent above previous year’s 1.1 million.

Globe Postpaid net additions surged 81 percent to an all-time high of 389,000. The quality of acquisitions has also improved with about 21 percent of regular postpaid net adds signing up for plans with monthly service fees of P999 and above, compared to just six…



Dell PH intensifies attack on ultra-thin laptop market

In an apparent attempt to go head-to-head with Apple in the premium segment of the laptop market, computer maker Dell has fortified its line-up of ultra-thin, full featured laptops aimed at urban professionals.

On Monday, Dell Philippines unveiled the XPS 14z laptop, one of the thinnest fully featured 14-inch laptops featuring an internal optical drive and discrete graphics option.

The mobile computer is premium priced at P65,150.00 (for the Intel Core i5 version) and P69,590.00 (with Intel Core i7).

Wi-tribe equips Petron convenience stores with Wi-Fi

Wi-Max operator Wi-tribe Telecoms recently signed an agreement with San Miguel Food Avenue (formerly Petron Treats) to provide free Wi-Fi to visitors of select San Miguel Food Avenue branches.
