Ateneo students top global contest with ‘Oscillohump’

An alternative energy solution that harvests energy from road humps has won top honors for two college students from Ateneo de Manila University in a global competition held in Paris last month.

Alyssa Tricia Eloise Vintola and Lorenz Ray Payonga, both fifth year electronics and communications engineering students, represented the country in the “3rd Go Green in the City” contest sponsored by energy management firm Schneider Electric.

Their entry, a project called “Oscillohump”, was declared the overall winner for using the simple concept of electromagnetic induction in gathering energy from road humps.

In France, Schneider Electric hosted 50 student finalists from Canada, China, India, Mexico, Russia, Turkey and France, as well as from countries in South East Asia –– Singapore, Indonesia, and Philippines.

The college-level students presented case studies illustrating their ideas on viable energy management solutions for one of five basic urban sectors (residential, university, business, water, and hospitals).

The Pinoy duo explained to the contest jurors that whenever vehicles pass over the Oscillohump, they press springs which plunge magnets into solenoids that will generate power to charge a battery.

The stored energy can then be used to power DC loads such as LED street lamps, traffic lights, or CCTV cameras. Excess energy may also be fed to the power grid, they said.

The mechanism, they added, gives motorists an opportunity to give back to the environment while ensuring road safety at the same time.

For winning the contest, Vintola and Payonga will have the opportunity to visit Schneider Electric facilities around the world and participate in networking sessions with its employees and top-level executives.

Furthermore, the two winners will also be offered employment opportunities in Schneider Electric.

Encouraged by the success of the previous two years, Schneider Electric opened up the competition to ten new countries this year, bringing the total number of countries taking part in the 2013 competition to nineteen.

These new countries are Mexico, Canada, and eight countries in South East Asia (Indonesia, Malaysia, The Philippines, Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam, Korea and Taiwan).
