PHOTOS | IBM holds tour of NY birthplace of mainframe

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the mainframe computer, tech giant IBM opened its factory in Poughkeepsie in upstate New York to members of the global media on Monday, April 7, 2014.

The Poughkeepsie facility is the birthplace of the mainframe and the venue where the company officially launched the System/360 on April 7, 1964 in what was dubbed by Forbes Magazine as “IBM’s $5-billion gamble” (equivalent to $38 billion in 2014).
