4 Pinay students bag medals in China Math Olympiad

Four Filipino students won a total of eight medals and awards in a math Olympiad for girls in China.

Kelsey Lim Tiong Soon of Grace Christian College and Andrea Jessica Jaba of St. Jude Catholic School won silver medals, and Isabel Jocyn Villanueva of Paref Woodrose School and Isabella Mae Tan of St. Jude Catholic School bagged bronze medals in the 13th China Girls Mathematical Olympiad (CGMO) held in Zhongshan City in Guangdong, China from August 10 to 14.

The four comprised the Philippine delegation to the contest, according to Simon Chua, president of the Mathematics Trainers Guild-Philippines (MTG).

In addition, the Philippine team swept the awards in the aerobics dance contest, a side event of the math Olympiad.

In the aerobics dance contest, Lim Tiong Soon, Jaba, Tan and Villanueva won first prize, Best in Creativity Award, Best in Cooperation Award and Best in Stage Style Award.

Lim Tiong Soon and Tan won bronze medals in last year?s CGMO. In the Korea International Mathematics Competition (KIMC) held last month in Daejeon City, Lim Tiong Soon and Jaba earlier won bronze medals, and Tan and Villanueva took home merit awards.

A total 38 teams joined this year?s CGMO from the US, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Philippines, Macau, Thailand, Malaysia, Bulgaria, North Korea, Iran, United Kingdom and host China.
