AMD unveils 4th-gen mobile APUs in local market

By Tom Noda

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) recently launched in the Philippines its fourth generation of accelerating processing units (APUs) called the 2014 A-Series mobile APU family, codenamed ?Kaveri.?

AMD Philippines national sales manager for Components Sonny Sy touted Kaveri as a ?breakthrough? because the APU uses only a single processor solution.

?Traditionally, you have a separate unit for CPU and GPU (graphics processing Unit). But now for the first time, both CPU and GPU cores have equal access to all the system resources such as the memory and more importantly to the system queuing or on how the software and apps line up to be processed by the APU and this is called the HSA or Heterogeneous System Architecture,? Sy explained.

He noted that HSA enables maximum compute capability, superior audio-visual quality and long battery life for ultra-thin and high-performance mobile PCs.

The new APU also has support for AMD?s Mantle API which is said to simplify game optimizations for programmers and developers, and AMD Radeon Dual Graphics which provide a performance boost from 49 percent to 108 percent.

?Another processor in the APU is AMD’s audio technology that lessens the load of the CPU cores and supports up to 32 distinct audio channels,? Sy said, noting that Mantle currently has a number of game titles and that AMD plans to have 20 more game supported with it on December.

Some of the leading notebook brands that feature AMD’s new mobile APUs are Acer and Lenovo. AMD said it will announce more computer brands soon.
