Xavier School to host tech-focused teaching confab on Apr. 17 -18

After a successfully holding the first FIT (Frontiers and Innovations in Teaching) Conference last year where over 300 teachers, administrators and education students were in attendance, Jesuit-run Xavier School will again hold the event this year.

FIT Xavier

Dubbed as ?Pupil Power,? the FIT 2015 conference will be held on April 17 and 18, 2015 (Friday-Saturday) at the Xavier School campus in San Juan City, Metro Manila.

This year’s conference puts the spotlight on students and seeks to answer these questions: What do we do to reach, engage, and empower our students to be more active and motivated learners? How can technology help us reach these goals?

Through the various sessions and activities, the conference aims to help educators gain a deeper understanding of students and how to enable students to take a more active role in their learning through the “Five 8s” (so named since each skill ends in the suffix “ate”):

? Investigate – Actively locate and evaluate content
? Contemplate – Think about the meaning of what has been learned.
? Create – Present new insight or find a new way of sharing the knowledge
? Collaborate – Work together in projects both on and offline.
? Communicate – Share learnings in an effective and creative manner.

The event will be attended by key professionals in their fields, among them Gino Borromeo, vice president and chief planning officer from the McCann Worldgroup Philippines, who was instrumental in a recent research on the ?Truth About Youth.? Also speaking in the gathering is Anita Chen, ICT facilitator at the Chinese International School in Hong Kong, who is an Apple Distinguished Educator and Google Certified Teacher. Chen has led initiatives in the use of technology to enhance learning, most specially in the language arts.

The keynote sessions will set the tone for over 40 idea and skill sessions that participants can choose from, to do a deep dive into particular classroom strategies, pedagogy, or technology skills, facilitated by practitioners from various disciplines.

Through the two-day conference, the organizers hope to provide a venue for schools to work together in enriching each other?s practice, and in making classrooms more pupil-powered.
