Kevin Chin, country manager of PAN for the Philippines, Indonesia and Vietnam, said the PAN-OS 8.0 contains new features beneficial to local customers.

“The advancements made to the latest version of PAN-OS 8.0 address some of the key challenges customers in the Philippines face in their digital transformation journey. Our philosophy is to provide a platform approach to prevent successful cyberattacks,” said Chin at the launch in Makati City.

“Through this, we hope that cybersecurity can truly be enabled and digital business value can be created so that stakeholders can realize the promises of digital transformation.”

PAN cited the 2016 Cloud Readiness Index published by the Asia Cloud Computing Association (ACCA) placing the Philippines in 9th place. However, the country got a score of only 3.5 in cybersecurity posture to effectively ward off cyberattacks.

But the tech firm also cited the adoption of a cloud-first policy by the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT).

PAN said the DICT gave the Philippines “a bigger push” in cloud computing, as well as making the country as one of the first to adopt a cloud-first policy.

Vincent Oh, regional engineering director for PAN for Asean, noted the importance of prevention, rather than detection, of cyberattacks.

“The bad guys are constantly innovating with new approaches and new techniques. We are currently behind the curve,” he said.

“We talk about prevention. We need to have a prevention-oriented mindset towards security. We can’t take the detection approach because then the bad guys are already in. If you are taking a preventive approach then, you are putting yourself in a better position to prevent those attacks,” the executive said.

Chin said the migration towards the cloud of many companies around the world for their online services could give hackers the window to attack.

He said PAN can help in this regard. “Cybersecurity is driving innovation and driving growth. We are enabling companies to create this business value by scaling up their business, offering them cloud security,” said Chin.

March Lainez, PAN security architect for the Philippines, said some of the highlights in PAN-OS 8.0 include expanded security for public and private clouds; new SaaS application security capabilities; and three new VM-Series virtual firewall models.

Fairly new in the Philippines, PAN has over 37,000 global customers and 1,000 new ones every quarter for the last 21 quarters in more than 150 countries across multiple industries.
