Lenovo is planning to steal your attention to showcase their entry to a new era of lightweight laptops — the Lenovo IdeaPad 710S Plus.

As we’ve mentioned, this notebook is “lightweight” in build, but performs with power and speed. Before we dig into the details, let us show you the basic specs of the 710S Plus we landed:

  • Operating system: Windows 10
  • System model: 80W3
  • Processor: Intel Core i7-7500U CPU @ 2.70GHz (4 CPUs)
  • Memory: 8GB RAM
  • Storage: 500GB solid-state drive
  • Graphics: Nvidia GeForce 940MX

Design

Let’s start the design discussion with the 710S Plus’ display. The 13.3-inch notebook flashes vibrant and incredibly bright colors on its 1920 x 1080 resolution screen. Watching “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” at 1080p, we noticed how the 710S Plus interpreted the RGB colors and blacks very well.

The 710S Plus sticks to the minimalistic design with its choice of I/O ports. A USB 2.0 port and SD memory card reader takes the left bay, while the power port, USB 3.0 Type-C port, USB 3.0 Type-A port, and the headphone jack sits on the right.

The good news is: you can light up the keyboard at night. There’s a function embedded on the space bar to switch your keyboard’s light to on or off. Unfortunately, its layout is a bit confusing on the right side of the panel due to the inverted slash key sitting right above the enter key.

Also, the right shift key was cut in half compared to the left shift key. The delete, backspace, and power keys are all placed on the upper right corner which may cause you to press unnecessary keys.

Meanwhile, the trackpad’s glossy surface was inconsistent at times, and felt sticky and uncomfortable by the time our hands got sweaty while doing the test. To its left ear is the fingerprint scanner, which works in higher accuracy than the trackpad.

Overall, the 710S Plus’ look and its weight mash extremely well to produce the sleek and mobile device Lenovo intends to appear.

Performance

Sowing an 8GB RAM to a notebook means productivity. This gem allows the 710S Plus to run several software simultaneously with no fluctuation at all. Demanding applications such as photo and video editing software runs effortlessly smooth, inviting us to task heavier activities to the 710S Plus.

With Intel Core i7 and GeForce 940MX on board, we can say that the 710S could run above average games (in terms of requirements). But due to its limited storage at 500GB, heftier games may eat a lot of space from the solid-state drive (SSD).

Since speedy devices digest more energy from the battery, the 710S Plus fails to stay alive longer without its power adapter plugged into it. We think that Lenovo compromised the battery’s size in order to provide the thin measurement and light weight of the notebook.

The 710S Plus is also armed with JBL speakers that exhales Dolby Audio Premium-enhanced sounds. We tried to play bass-y songs while cranking up the volume to its loudest and the notebook handled the whole thing pretty well.

What bothers us is the speaker’s placement at the bottom of the notebook, which muffles the sound most of the time. As much as we’d love to praise the sound aspect of the 710S Plus, the speakers’ awkward placement was crucial to our verdict.

We have benchmarked the Lenovo 710S Plus and this result came out:

Conclusion

Tagged with a P60,995 price ticket, the Lenovo 710S Plus may be too pricey for its offered skill set. But if you’re up to traveling light with a powerful laptop on hand, this notebook might be a good option.
