The announcement was made at a press conference at the Discovery Primea Hotel in Makati City on January 11.

?We hope to use this occasion to provide Filipinos with a better grasp of recent developments in the automated age as well as the technologies and best practices to help everyone protect themselves and their systems from attack and unauthorized access,? said Global Chamber Manila executive director Colin Christie.

The resource panel will be led by Marc Goodman, global strategist and consultant who has worked with the US government, Nato, Interpol, and the UN Counterterrorism Task Force.

Goodman is also the author of the international bestseller ?Future Crimes: Inside the Digital Underground and the Battle for our Connected World? and founder of the Future Crimes Institute. Among his current areas of research are security issues surrounding emerging technologies like cryptocurrencies, artificial intelligence, big data, robotics, and IoT.

Awareness of the need for cybersecurity solutions and best practices in the face of increasing digital connectivity remains weak in the Philippines, according to veteran business executive and entrepreneur Reynaldo Lugtu.

This is true even among companies with IT professionals in their staff. He mentioned that a lot of small and medium-sized companies are attacked by ransomware and they don?t even realize this until their systems shut down.

?Attackers know that a lot of people in the Philippines are not as vigilant, as aware and as protected. That?s why attackers choose the Philippines. So this is incumbent upon individuals and organizations to do the best practices to protect [themselves] and their companies,? said Lugtu who is president of digital customer engagement firm The Engage Philippines and digital transformation consultancy firm Hungry Workhorse, among others.

He added that technology is so fast moving that it is always ahead of regulators, thus the need for individuals, enterprises, organizations and institutions to act seriously on securing their data. These include the millennials who, though tech-savvy, do not fully understand the risks involved in accepting apps which access their data. They should be critical of the apps they use and the things that they download, said Lugtu.
