ICYMI | Who takes over your Facebook account when you die?

Let’s face it: Death is inevitable. It’s going to happen whether we talk about it or not. So, before you log out of life for good. It’s best to get your affairs in order.

Facebook after death

Just as people are advised to draft their wills early on, Facebook users also have the option of appointing their most trusted friend to be their “Facebook legacy contact.”

Facebook debuted the “legacy contact” feature back in 2015. However, it seems not a lot of Pinoy Facebook users are aware of it. (Or, maybe, they just don’t want to think of it?)

Pick an FB friend

The term, “legacy contact,” refers to the person who would be authorized to take care of your Facebook account after you die. You pick this person from among your Facebook friends.

Facebook gives the following intructions on how you can pick your legacy contact.

1. Go to your account Settings > Security > Legacy Contact.

2. Then type in the name of the person you would like to make your Legacy Contact.

3. You have the option to send them a message to let them know, but it’s not required. Otherwise, they’ll notified when Facebook becomes aware of your passing.

4. Then select whether your Legacy Contact will have Data Archiving permission and whether or not you’d like your account to be deleted.

Legacy contact privileges

It’s advisable for you to get a legacy contact because that is a much better option than letting Facebook be the default caretaker. A dormant Facebook account could also be vulnerable to hackers or scammers who might try to use in in their nefarious schemes.

According to Facebook, your legacy contact has three main functions:

1. He or she can respond to new friend requests (example: old friends or family members who weren’t yet on Facebook).
2. Update your profile picture and cover photo.
3. Request the removal of your account.

Your legacy contact can NOT do the following:

1. Log into your account.
2. Remove or change past posts, photos and other things shared on your timeline.
3. Read your messages.
4. Remove any of your friends or make new friend requests.
5. Add a new legacy contact to your account.

Our tip: Choose your legacy contact wisely so you can rest easy before you rest in peace.
