IPOPHL chief says IP law should be mandatory subject in MCLE

The Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) has urged its institutional partners to consider making intellectual property (IP) as a mandatory subject matter in the Mandatory Continuing Legal Education (MCLE).

IPOPHL director-general Josephine R. Santiago

In a symposium conducted by the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) and LawAsia Philippines held recently, IPOPHL director-general Josephine R. Santiago said that it is important for lawyers to be updated in dynamic and continuously changing fields such as IP law.

“We are proposing this to our partners in order for lawyers to keep up with emerging issues affecting the field, such as competition and data privacy,” Santiago told members of the associations.

IPOPHL is a certified as a MCLE provider. It recently expanded its training and education program in 2016 to include providing full 36 units to participants on IP and related topics.

Established by IBP in 2001, the MCLE is administered to ensure that all lawyers “keep abreast with law and jurisprudence, maintain the ethics of the profession, and enhance the standards of the practice of law”.

Santiago also asked the members of the legal profession to take part in its new venture with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the Inventors Assistance Program.

The program matches investors and small businesses with limited means with patent attorneys to provide pro-bono legal assistance to secure patent protection.

“I hope this is something you will all receive positively, considering volunteerism is believed to be a significant factor in securing international clients,” Santiago said.
