Benguet electric coop to offer broadband services of Converge ICT

By Aldwin Quitasol

BAGUIO CITY ? The Benguet Electric Cooperative (Beneco), which was earlier tapped by the government to serve as an Internet service provider in the Cordillera region, said it has entered into  a business partnership with broadband provider Converge ICT.

According to Beneco assistant general manager Melchor Licoben, they have signed a memorandum of agreement with Converge ICT that allows the Dennis Uy-owned broadband firm to install communication facilities on the poles owned by the electric cooperative.

Beneco and Converge ICT signed the agreement in August 2018 at Le Monet Hotel in Baguio City.

Licoben said Beneco will offer the broadband services of Converge ICT to its member-consumers. ?Ang Beneco po ang magiging taga-pagbenta at taga-kabit ng Internet ng Convergence ICT,? he said.

Licoben said that installation works are ongoing, with both parties aiming to start offering the broadband services at the start of the year. According to Licoben, Beneco is the first electric cooperative to partner with companies like Converge ICT to provide Internet connectivity.

Meanwhile, Licoben said Beneco is also set to sign a final agreement with the Department of Information and Communication Technology (DICT). He said Beneco has already rolled its fiber-optic cables, which the DICT is going to use to deliver broadband connectivity to would-be customers.

Licoben said the Internet project will initially provide connectivity to government institutions such as the city government and barangay halls of Baguio, municipal government building of La Trinidad, provincial capitol of Benguet, and police stations of Baguio and La Trinidad to further enhance their services to the people.

Licoben said Beneco is presently completing the installation of fiber-optic cables around the said government offices. He disclosed that the DICT?s use of Beneco?s fiber-optic cables will be free-of-charge as this is a government project.
