Oppo PH lifts curtains on Reno, its new flagship series

Smartphone maker Oppo has officially launched its new flagship series dubbed Reno, which features a “motorized shark fin pop-up camera”.

The Oppo Reno and Oppo Reno 10x Zoom are now available in all Oppo concept stores nationwide. A 5G variant of the Oppo Reno is also part of line-up but is not yet available locally.

The Reno series is the newest addition from the Chinese phone brand apart from their F series flagships, with the latest in the roster being the F11 Pro.

Both the vanilla Reno version and the 10x zoom have an aluminum chassis sandwiched by Gorilla Glass 6 on the front and Gorilla Glass 5 on the back.

The midrange vanilla Reno has an earphone jack which the 10x zoom lacks, but an option for expandable storage has been omitted. The 10x zoom, on the other hand, has a hybrid-SIM slot for an SD card.

When it comes to viewing experience, both devices have an AMOLED panel with the 10x zoom boasting a 387ppi spread across a 6.6” screen with a resolution of 2340×1080 with a screen-to-body ratio of 93.1%.

For the non-10x zoom Reno, a smaller 6.4” screen with a resolution of 2340 by 1080 pixels at 402 ppi can be spotted, giving it a screen ratio of the same 93.1% from the 10x zoom.

In the camera department, the Reno 10x zoom has a triple camera module. The setup includes a regular, an ultra-wide angle, and a telephoto lens. The f/1.7 main shooter is powered by a 48MP Sony IMX586 Quad Bayer sensor that produces higher-quality 12MP images through pixel binning, as well as Optical Image Stabilization (OIS). The f/2.2 ultra-wide angle lens, on the other hand, can capture images from a 120-degree field-of-view.

Meanwhile, the Reno 10x zoom’s highlight feature is the periscope optic-enabled telephoto lens that rivals the Huawei P30 Pro’s with the former being brighter with an aperture of f/3.0 as opposed to the P30 Pro’s f/3.4 and having a higher 13 megapixel than the latter’s 8 megapixel telephoto camera.

The vanilla Reno lacks the periscope module, with only the f/1.7 48MP camera with Phase Detection Autofocus (PDAF) and a 5MP Depth sensor with an f/2.4 aperture.

Both devices will be running the latest ColorOS 6 on top of Android 9 (Pie). Oppo’s own skin will have a light color theme (white background with lightly-colored gradients) and their newest universal font co-developed with Chinese typeface firm Hanyi called the Oppo Sans. The new version will also be packing the missed app drawer.

When it comes to the internals, the Oppo Reno 10x zoom will be run by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset, while the Reno will be powered by the Snapdragon 710 instead.

The Reno 10x also has a larger battery capacity at 4065 mAh as opposed to the Reno’s 3765 mAh one although both are capable of 20W VOOC Flash Charging.

Both phones have 6GB and 8GB RAM variants with 256GB internal storage, although expandable storage is only possible with the 10x zoom version.

The Oppo Reno 10x Zoom will be available in Ocean Green, Jet Black and Mist Pink color and is priced at P45,990 while the Oppo Reno, with color variants Ocean Green, Jet Black, Nebula Purple, Pink Mist and Coral Orange retails at P26,990.

The Reno series will also be available through device plans from Globe and Smart starting July. For online shoppers, Lazada will also be offering exclusive pre-orders from June 21 to June 30. For installment options, Home Credit offers 0% interest in 9 and 12-month plans.
