DICT brings free Wi-Fi to Pag-asa Island in West PH Sea

The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) has announced that the remote island of Pag-asa in the Kalayaan Group of Island is now connected to the Internet after the installation of the government’s free Wi-Fi program.

From having to purchase cellular load daily just to go online, the 184 inhabitants of the 37.2-hectare island west of Puerto Princesa City in Palawan are now able to use the Internet in looking for alternative opportunities for livelihood and education through Free Wi-Fi for All.

Ana Rhea Bania, officer-in-charge for tourism at the municipal office of Kalayaan, was among those who were appreciative of the program’s presence in the island.

“Free Wi-Fi is a huge help for us, given our situation here at Kalayaan and how isolated it is. We get to save a lot since we used to pay almost P300 pesos everyday, adding up to around P9,000 monthly, just so we can connect to Internet that is slow and unstable,” she said.

The Free Wi-Fi for All is available at the Municipal Plaza of Kalayaan and the Kalayaan Town Hall.
