Fortinet cybersecurity confab series confront emerging threats

The ongoing annual Fortinet 361° Security Conference — which made a stop in Manila last September 4 before proceeding to other Southeast Asia cities — highlighted new innovations to keep business networks secure in a hyper-connected landscape.

According to Peerapong Jongvibool — VP for Fortinet SEA and Hong Kong — the concept of building a network with security as its cornerstone foundation enables the architecture and deployment of business critical applications and services of enterprises, bringing in speed without security compromises.

“In today’s hyper-connected world, data moves between various environments such as multi-cloud, ioT, and mobile devices. It is important for modern networks to enforce consistent security, yet preserve functionality in the network, so that essential workflows are protected along their entire data path as data travels through multiple environments,” said Jongvibool.

This is why, as Jongvibool mentioned, the conference series for the region this year focuses on security-driven networking wherein networking and security are integrated and combined. The keynote and panel discussions will encompass topics on the modern changing threat landscape, the growing challenge of interconnected devices, the widening of distributed networks, and adapting to new and emerging demands through security strategies.

The conference is in a good spot considering the Philippines’ current policy conditions. In efforts to create a single digitized government, the Department of Informations and Communications Technology (DICT) recently bared the E-Government Masterplan (EGMP) 2022 that will focus on digitizing basic government services to promote an open and efficient governance.

“The demands of digital transformation are forcing organizations of all sizes and industries to reassess the effectiveness and scalability of existing legacy security infrastructure. Networks in sensitive sectors such as government, financial services and healthcare, often hold highly-valuable data on individuals, financial transactions, and critical infrastructure,” said the principal consultant of Fortinet SEA and Hong Kong Anthony Lim.

Lim noted that these sectors are the usual targets of threats like ransomware and the like because of their data-rich environments. With the increasing complications in addressing these network environments, forward-looking strategies is recommended, geared towards the hyper-connectivity of meshed ecosystems, businesses, and societies with security integrated alongside all of them.

The transformation journey of local businesses has been a continuing work in progress, with local government units providing supportive programs and initiatives to accommodate these innovations. But the realm of cybersecurity is a continuous learning curve and threats are undergoing the same conditions as well.

Efforts to convene the players in such an industry in order to equip with themselves with the necessary information that may impose risks in their own organizations is now an increasing trend since data is one of the most valuable resources in the current era, as well as moving forward.

“The pace of digital transformation in the Philippines is accelerating,” remarked Louie Castaneda, country manager of Fortinet Philippines. “Since the entry of this mindset into the mainstream consciousness roughly three years ago, we have seen local business undertaking their transformation journey.”
