Facebook urges entreps, gov’t units to use platform for community building

Facebook — in partnership with the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), and the Department of Tourism (DOT) — recently concluded the Manila leg of the three-day Community Boost Event that gathered over 700 entrepreneurs, government representatives, and community leaders at the Grand Hyatt Manila in Bonifacio Global City in Taguig, Metro Manila.

In his speech, Facebook Philippines country director John Rubio said that one of the core missions of Facebook is to provide its users with the tools and resources for community building. He noted that entrepreneurs, non-profit organizations, and youth leaders can use Facebook to grow their businesses, promote advocacies and initiatives, and reach the audience where their message is relevant.

“It’s what drives us to build tools and resources for inspiring community leaders and entrepreneurs who work hard to bring people together around shared passions, common causes, and important topics,” said Rubio. He added that they are constantly tackling the spread of harmful content, mentioning that the company has employed over 30,000 people for safety and security alone, or what’s more known as content moderation.

To address the questions about the algorithm used to decide what type of content goes into each user’s field, Facebook introduced the “Why am I seeing this?” prompt. Now, users can choose if they don’t want to see a specific ad of a brand. Rubio explained that Facebook is emphasizing the need for transparency.

The event featured a series of digital literacy and marketing workshops. The first day was attended by representatives from the government, followed by non-government institutions the following day, while the last day was saved for the small and medium-sized businesses which are bringing large inclusive strides in today’s economy.

Rubio said the talks focused on “a lot of different communities about how they can work with us on the platform to build their communities.”

Facebook Community Boost has been the means for the company to share information about their platform and the tools that they have. Attendees are then exposed to these tools and trainings as well, to be able to navigate the modern digital economy with enough digital skills.

“We want to make sure that all our communities know how best to connect with their constituencies, whether that be customers; for the government, their stakeholders; and for the non-government members, people who are interested in those types of communities,” said Rubio. “We have digital education, safety and protection, we have a push on privacy…to protect your data, there are also tools and resources for businesses and non-government institutions.”
