PH e-sports teams collect 3 golds at 30th SEA Games

The Philippine e-sports contingent at the Southeast Asian Games seized the opportunity to shine on home soil after capturing three gold medals in the maiden staging of e-sports in the biennial competition.

This is the first time that e-sports was included as a medal event in the SEA Games. The competitions, which were sponsored by gaming gear maker Razer, were held at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan City.

Right after obliterating Malaysia with a score of 2-0, Philippine team Sibol went for jugular by outdueling Indonesia, 3-2, during the grand finals.

With a Granger-Lunox-Lolita-X.Borg-Grock ensemble, Team Sibol was able to win the fifth match after both teams claimed two wins apiece, and eventually ending the final match with the Indonesian team having a kill deficit of 17 (3-20). The latter utilized a Zhask-Harith-Khufra-Chou-Thamuz lineup with only three towers pushed by the 15-minute mark.

The Filipino team is comprised of Kenneth Jiane “Kenji” Villa, Karl Gabriel “KarlTzy” Nepomuceno, Carlito “Ribo” Ribo, Jeniel “Haze” Bata-anon, Angelo Kyle “Pheww” Arcangel, Allan Sancio “Lusty” Castromayor, and Jason Rafael “Jay” Torculas.

Most players from the Indonesian team were participants of the last M1 World Championship, the global contest for MLBB, organized by their game developer Moonton.

Meanwhile, for the PC game Defense of the Ancients (DOTA) 2, the Philippine team comprised mostly of members coming from the local e-sports team Adroit was able to pull off a similar Game 5 win like Team Sibol members for MLBB to capture the country’s second gold medal in the SEA Games.

The DOTA 2 players for Team Sibol reached the finals after defeating team Vietnam during the upper bracket finals via a 2-0 score. The team members include Mc Nicholson “Mac” Villanueva, John Anthony “Natsumi” Vargas, Jun “Bok” Kanehara, Marvin Salvador “Boomy” Rushton, Bryle Jacob “CML” Alvizo, Van Jerico “Van” Manalaysay, and James Erice “Erice” Guerra.

Finally, Caviar “EnDerr” Acampado took home the country’s third gold medal after defeating Singapore’s Thomas “Blysk” Kopankiewicz for the championship match in Starcraft II with a 4-1 tally.
