Grab PH says passenger selfie, audio-video recording ‘lawful’ but will follow NPC halt order

Grab Philippines said on Thursday, Feb. 6, that it has suspended its passenger selfie feature and as the pilot study for in-car audio and video recording in compliance with an order from the National Privacy Commission (NPC).

In a statement, the company said the aforementioned initiatives were introduced as pioneering safety technology features with the aim of protecting the ride-hailing community.

“These features follow the legal criteria for lawful processing of data,” Grab Philippines. “However, we recognize the mandate of the NPC to protect user privacy. The passenger selfie feature and audio and video recording pilot have been temporarily suspended as we work with NPC to address their concerns.”

The company said it will fully cooperate with the NPC “in providing necessary supporting documents to adhere to their standards, implement additional corrective measures, and ensure that NPCs expectations and our approach for safety are mutually understood.”

The NPC announced on Wednesday, Feb. 6, that it has issued a Cease and Desist Order (CDO) to Grab Philippines after finding deficiencies in complying with the Data Privacy Act of 2012 (DPA) for the three security initiatives.
