Nokia releases ‘budget’ smartphone for Filipinos looking to upgrade

The Android One concept is the nearest that any smartphone user can get to a pure stock version of Google’s Android operating system — unless, of course, they’re using Pixel devices. And although HMD Global has been equipping all available Nokia smartphones with Android One systems, the same cannot be done for ultra-budget offerings they will release.

This is where Android (Pie) Go Edition comes in. The new Nokia C1, not to be confused with Realme’s C1 offering released at Q1 of 2019, is the latest entry-level smartphone to be launched by HMD Global. This release is also on the heels of the Nokia 2.3, which made its debut locally last month.

The Go Edition is a no-brainer on this device since it only comes with 1GB of RAM. Most stock applications are lite versions that are available on the Google Playstore, to lessen the strain on the limited storage.

Surprisingly, the Nokia C1 is a refreshing budget model since it enables memory expansion of up to 64GB on top of its built-in 16GB. Most devices in its league struggles with limited storage and this option for SD card use provides more breathing room for storing media files and some gaming titles.

The display on the C1 is less than stellar, a 5.45” FWVGA IPS panel with toughened glass protection, but users will be able to squeeze an entire day’s worth of use with its 2500mAh removable battery and standard 5V1A charging.

Another nice little addition to the device is the presence of a dedicated Google Assistant button. It also uses a micro-USB 2.0 port with OTG support, and a 3.5mm audio jack. The rear shooter is a single 5MP f/2.4 lens while the front 5MP lens fortunately has an LED Flash.

Sancho Chak, HMD global general manager for Hong Kong, Macau and the Philippines, shared in a statement that the new Nokia C1 is positioning itself as the device for Filipino consumers looking to upgrade and level up from a feature phone.

Since 3G devices are still having widespread usage in the more rural parts of the country, the phone will also be launching as well in Cebu and Davao.

“We wanted to ensure that we offer them a smartphone that offers the Nokia experience of quality, reliability, and ease of use. The Nokia C1 will deliver to fans level up experiences, enabling them to get them ahead in life,” the executive said.

Until February 12, the Nokia C1 will be exclusively available in Shopee and Nokia mobile stores and kiosks. Starting on the 12th, it will also be sold on Lazada, MemoXpress, and Argomall. Available only in one color configuration, black, the budget Nokia C1 smartphone retails for P2,990.
