Realme PH overtakes Huawei as top 4 smartphone vendor in Q4

After just a year of operations, Realme has climbed to the fourth spot of the top smartphone brands in the Philippines in the fourth quarter of 2019, according to market analyst firm Canalys.

Huawei slipped to number 5 as Realme surged to take 9% of the local market. Canalys said Huawei did still manage to grow but this was behind the market average, as smartphone shipments in the Philippines increased 28% in Q4.

Oppo and Vivo held the top two spots with 27% and 25% shares, respectively. Tech powerhouse Samsung was number 3 with a 9% share during Q4 but its shipments plunged by 32% — the only company to experience a negative growth.

Realme Philippines grew its year-on-year sell-in shipment by a staggering 709 percent, the fastest of any smartphone brand.

In 2019, Realme Philippines established a strong presence in the market with the launch of six new devices positioned strategically across different price segments.

The company’s record-breaking feat can also be attributed to the partnerships it sealed in the previous year, such as those with SM Supermalls, Home Credit and Qualcomm. It also struck a tie-up with Mobile Legends Developer Moonton.

Realme Philippines also grew offline and online, strengthening its presence in Shopee and Lazada. It also grew the number of its distributors, resellers and brick-and-mortar stores in 2019. The brand currently has 4,500 partner stores, 280 kiosks and 24 concept stores nationwide.

Additionally, the brand has shown its intention to propel the growing demand for 5G by offering its 5G smartphone lineup in the Philippines. The company said it is now in close coordination with local telecom operators to ensure the compatibility of its devices.
