The ITU (International Telecommunications Union) has created the latest video on the state of broadband worldwide.

VEGAS STYLE. An IBM customer gives a testimonial during Monday’s general session at IBM’s Information On Demand (IOD) conference at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. The IOD, which is now on its sixth edition, is the biggest event for IBM’s software group. More than 10,000 participants, including from Philippine firms, are attending this year’s event which focuses on analytics and “big data”.

Filipino-owned software firm Exist Global recently commemorated its 10th anniversary with co-founders Winston Damarillo, Willex Perez, and Junnie Arreza joining CEO Jerry Rapes in a toast to honor 10 years of pioneering efforts in open-source software engineering in Asia Pacific.

TRAILBLAZER. Judith Duavit-Vazquez speaks during a press briefing on Friday in Makati City where she formally announced her selection as the first Filipino and Asian female to serve in the board of the powerful Internet Corporation of Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). Vazquez will start her three-year term at the upcoming ICANN general assembly on Oct. 28, 2011. See related story here.

NO SPECTACLES NEEDED. Toshiba unveiled in the country last week its Qosmio 3D laptops, which are reputedly the first mobile computers that don’t require 3D glasses for viewing. The units can also instantly convert 2D video content into 3D.

MAKING THE LEAP. PLDT and Smart Communications have combined their resources to open its first “Jump” experience center at the Cyberzone section of SM Megamall. The facility, which is right beside a Globe Telecom store, features the latest products and technologies and will be replicated in different parts of the country.

PHILIPPINE FOCUS. Social networking site Multiply.com, which recently reinvented itself as an e-commerce platform hub, formally opens its Philippine office on Tuesday at the Hanston building in Ortigas complex in Pasig City. Although its Indonesian office has a higher headcount at about 50 employees, Multiply.com’s main market is the Philippines where more than 50 percent of its subscribers are based.

Marko Ahtisaari, senior vice president for design at Nokia, leads the launch of the company’s new flagship phone model N9, at the Nokia Connection 2011 event at CommunicAsia in Singapore on Tuesday. The N9 will be available later this year.

With the belief that it can regain the spunk and innovative spirit that has made it the world’s most dominant phone company, Finnish tech giant Nokia, led by its CEO Stephen Elop, unveiled on Tuesday a host of new products and initiatives, which included the full-screen touch phone Nokia N9, at the Nokia Connection 2011 event in CommunicAsia in Singapore.
