8layertech and Computer Professionals-Union, which are both from the Philippines, were joined by Tunisia?s IEEE ENIS Student Branch as the top three winners. They were selected from the 50 submissions received by Digital Freedom International. Digital Freedom International was particularly impressed by ?the amount of celebrations in the Philippines (29 for a population of 92 millions) and the quality of events.? SFD is a worldwide celebration of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) with the goal of educating the public about the existence and the benefits of using FOSS in education, in government, at home and in business. The SFD ?best event competition? is an international recognition of the efforts made by individual organizing teams in regards to spreading the importance of software freedom and reaching out to the relevant groups of people in their area. The three winning teams receive a Lemote Yeelonng netbook architectured around the Loongson CPU (which will enable them to improve application support on this platform and run only free software) as well as the book “Free Software Free Society: selected essays by Richard M. Stallman” signed by the author himself. This year, two leading organizations from the FOSS movements provided the rewards to the winners: the Free Software Foundation, the non-profit organization behind the FOSS movement, and Lemote, a private company making PCs running only free software from the BIOS to the drivers and the operating system as well.  ]]>
