[/caption] ZTE, which is the world?s fourth largest phone manufacturer and third largest smartphone maker, has appointed MSI-ECS as its exclusive local distributor. According to MSI-ECS president Jimmy Go, his company has created an entirely new business unit dedicated for ZTE ? the first mobile phone product to be carried in its huge catalogue. Known primarily as a distributor of IT products, particularly the top PC brands, MSI-ECS said it diversified into the mobile phone business because of the convergence of technology, with smartphones now carrying the capabilities of ordinary computers. Although it is only that the ZTE is launching its mobile phone brand, the tech firm said during the press launch it is the same company behind the first Netphone unit that was launched by Smart Communications two years ago. Go said the company is initially rolling out six new products ? two basic phones, three Android smartphones, and a tablet-phone ? although he stressed that more phone models will be introduced in the next few months. He said these products are aimed at the medium to high-end segments of the market. ZTE Philippines president James Chen added, however, that MSI-ECS will eventually carry other ZTE mobility products such broadband dongles and pocket Wi-Fi gadgets. Told that other Chine-made phones are already available in the market, ZTE officials also said that other brands do not have the same quality and support since it manufactures its own phones and is not merely a branding company.]]>
