Serving as a prelude to the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) scheduled every December, the competition seeks to widen the scope of the annual event by encouraging independent and young filmmakers to participate via their phone-made short films. The contest is open to all high school and college students duly endorsed by their respective schools/universities. Entries must be three to five minutes long, totally filmed through the use of mobile phone cameras, and must be in sync with this year’s theme “Restoring Road Courtesy Among Motorists and Pedestrians.” Sixty entries will be selected, 20 each from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, which ten entries per category (high school and college). Six regional winners will be chosen and awarded P25,000 each during the MMFF’s Gabi ng Parangal set on December 27. Apart from this, winners will receive free post-production packages, digital cameras, broadband kits, high-end smart phones, and apprenticeship under film director Paul Soriano. According to MMDA chairman Francis Tolentino, there will also be a university caravan next month to further promote the Cine-Phone and Student Short Film Competition. A team led by Soriano, who heads the New Wave section of this year’s MMFF, will go around several school campuses such as Colegio de San Juan de Letran in Intramuros and University of the Philippines-Diliman to encourage promising student artists to show their craft through the competition specifically designed for them. “I am optimistic that the Cine-Phone competition will produce potential award-winning directors and will add to the success of this year’s MMFF,” Tolentino said. The MMFF, an annual event espoused by MMDA, is organized primarily to help promote and enhance the preservation, growth and development of the local film industry and to extend financial assistance to the local movie industry through its beneficiaries representing various sectors of the movie industry. ]]>
