Other related government agencies such as the Department of Trade and Industry are also involved in the program. ICTO executive director Louis Casambre said the project is crucial in understanding the dynamics within and outside the ICT sector. ?The ICT Industry Mapping Project seeks to obtain information integral to the development of strategic ICT industry programs that would help increase the potential of the ICT industry and increase its impact on the country’s socio-economic development,? Casambre said. The ICTO said the initiative has six objectives:

1. Define and describe the ICT Industry and its segments; 2. Describe and examine the state of performance of the ICT industry as a whole and by segments, measuring employment and income contribution; 3. Identify current and future trends; 4. Identify sector/segment needs that have not yet been addressed by government policies or programs; 5. Identify potential areas for government and private sector capacity-building and support to accelerate the growth and; 6. To stand as a benchmark study of the ICT industry by introducing standard data collection and data sourcing strategies to ensure a steady flow of strategic information and analytical knowledge products critical to the sector

The government said the mapping project is needed if the country wants to meet its target of generating direct revenues of $50 billion by the year 2016 ? with $25 billion coming from the IT-BPO industry, and an additional $25 billion from other ICT industries. ?Such targets are achievable through carefully-structured and strategically-placed programs or interventions to be developed as a master ICT Industry road map envisioned to strengthen further a high-growth industry,? the agency said.]]>
