Richard Harshman, AWS Asean head, explained during a press briefing that the new edge location stores local content in cache or temporary memory, making it easier and faster for local users to process and retrieve their data. When used in tandem with CloudFront and Route 53, the new edge location delivers content seamlessly and in high speed since it no longer needs to travel to a US or Japan-based server to retrieve the content. The launch of the new edge location in the Philippines brings the total number of AWS edge locations to 51 worldwide. The latest move of AWS to fortify its presence in the country has put the tech firm at a strong position among non-local provider of cloud computing services in the country. While US cloud players such as Google and Salesforce.com have been in the country for sometime now, its services were limited to cloud-hosted applications offered by local cloud providers. Until AWS came along, the booming cloud computing market has been dominated mostly by homegrown player such as DataOne Asia, IP Converge, PLDT, Globe Telecom, and ArcusIT, among others. Harshman said AWS also has local partners but divulge their identities. ?We?re still talking with them and we?ll announce them soon,? he said. The executive said among their current crop of local clients are Solar TV Jollibee Foods Corp., Payroll Hero, Voyager Innovations, SplitmediaLabs, eScience, and Kalibrr. At the same time, AWS has also rolled out AWS Activate, a package of resources for startups, including AWS credits, training, developer support, a special startup community forum, and special offers from third parties. AWS Activate bundles resources in packages, designed to enable startups of different types to get started with AWS and use the AWS platform to help grow their businesses. ]]>
