icto-building Currently, local data centers can connect only to the PHOPenIX via Internet facilities operated by the Advanced Science and Technology Institute (ASTI) in Diliman, Quezon City and Globe Telecomn in Pasong Tamo, Makati City. Making PLDT the third connection option is the closest thing to PLDT joining the PHOpenIX, according to ICT Office chief Louis Casambre. It can be recalled that PLDT has been steadfast in its refusal to connect to the government-run Internet exchange, citing security issues as among its major concerns. This refusal has attracted criticism from various quarters, who say that PLDT is contributing to the slow speed of Internet in the Philippines. The signing ceremony is scheduled to be held on Monday, Sept. 7, at the ICT Office building in Quezon city. Expected to attend the event are Sen. Paolo Benigno “Bam” Aquino IV as well as top DOST and PLDT officials. It was Aquino who convinced PLDT to become the third connection point for the Internet exchange, said Casambre. The event will also serve as the formal venue for the designation of the Philippine Open Internet Exchange (PHOPenIX) as the official Government Internet Protocol (IP) Exchange (G/IPX) as per Administrative Order No. 39. “These two events will ensure that Internet traffic to and from government networks will be transmitted efficiently and securely in compliance with Administrative Order 39,” a statement from the ICT Office said.]]>
