98 Pinoy kids capture award in Australian math contest

AustralianMath_awardees_1000x700 Andres Rico Gonzales, Grade 8 student, emerged as one of the only 42 students worldwide who got perfect scores among the 300,000 participants from 40 countries including the Philippines who joined the contest this year. The AMC was administered simultaneously in each participating country. Executive director Mike Clapper of the Australian Mathematics Trust (AMT), which organizes the AMC, flew to Manila from Australia for the awarding ceremony of the Filipino winners held on Oct. 23 at the Manila Grand Opera Hotel in Sta. Cruz, Manila. Clapper awarded the winners together with Andrew Hodges, first secretary of the Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade; Dr. Simon Chua, president of the Mathematics Trainers Guild-Philippines (MTG); Ruby Cristobal, head of the S&T Manpower Education Research and Promotion Division of the Department of Science and Technology-Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI); and Dr. Isidro Aguilar, MTG business manager. Gonzales received the AMC medal and the Peter O?Halloran Certificate of Excellence for his feat. ?Filipino students do very well (in the competition),? said Clapper. Other AMC medalists are Kyle Patrick Dulay of the Philippine Science High School-Main, Vince Jan Torres of Sta. Rosa Science and Technology High School and Farrell Eldrian Wu of MGC New Life Christian Academy. Filipino students who won Prize Awards are Nicholas Marcus Lua, Kei Hang Derek Chan, and Alexandra Gochian, all of Saint Jude Catholic School; Raphael Dylan Dalida, St. Mary?s Academy-Pasay; Erin Christen Noceda, Special Education Center for the Gifted-Subic Bay; Filbert Ephraim Wu, MGC New Life Christian Academy; Annika Angela Mei Tamayo, Ateneo De Iloilo-SMCS; Frederick Ivan Tan, Xavier School; Bryce Ainsley Sanchez, Grace Christian College; Sean Ty, Zamboanga Chong Hua High School; and Clyde Wesley Ang, Chiang Kai Shek College. ?The 2015 AMC results showed that Filipino students continue to demonstrate remarkable competencies in the field of mathematics,? said Chua. In her message, DOST-SEI director Josette Biyo said, ?Our performances in the AMC and other mathematics and science competitions have been very promising to say the least. It has become a trend that our Philippine contingents constantly bring home medals and honorable distinctions that seems to challenge our students even more to perform better in other competitions.? ?A big congratulations to all the students who won a prize this year in the Australian Mathematics Competition,? Hodges told the awardees.
