The Department of Justice — Office of Cybercrime (DOJ-OOC) recently received a mobile phone forensic device from the United States Homeland Security Investigations (USHSI).
In a simple ceremony held in the DOJ premises on March 7, DOJ secretary Emmanuel Caparas received the UFED Cellebrite unit and cited the USHSI for its help to combat cybercrime.
He said the electronic tool “will further strengthen our commitment against child abuse”.
According to scmagazine.com, the Cellebrite UFED device “is a fully equipped mobile forensic tool that enables quick and easy data acquisition from more than 8,000 mobile devices, including not only cellphones, but handheld GPS units, tablets and other mobile platforms.”
The event was attended by representatives from the USHSI Office in Manila, namely Attache Ransom Avilla, Deputy Attache Juan Bortfeld, Assistant Attache Steven Sampilo, Assistant Attache Jim Anglemyer, and Special Agent Keith Cramsey.
During the turnover ceremony, DOJ-OOC agent-in-charge Jed Sherwin Uy said the DOJ-OOC, together with the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) and the Philippine National Police (PNP), recently scored high profile arrests on facilitators and perpetrators of online child abuse through valuable information shared by the USHSI, which has been at the forefront in combating child sexual exploitation.
