Acer marks 40th year by unveiling ‘world’s thinnest notebook’

On its 40th founding anniversary, Taiwanese tech giant Acer unveiled on Sept. 17 the Aspire S7 notebook, which it described as the “world’s thinnest.”

In an event participated by 2013 Miss World Megan Young, Acer Philippines rolled out its “S” Series line of laptops, which was comprised of the S7, the S3, and the S5.

Cuki Pendor, Acer Philippines business lead in digital display devices, said the units will be sold at the following prices: the S7 at P64,999; the S5 with i3 processor at P39,999, while the i5 version is at P44,999; the S3 with i3 processor is at P32,999 and the i5 version at P42,999.

The S3 is positioned as an entry-level notebook. It has a 13.3-inch FHD IPS LCD with 1920 x 1080 pixels, running on either an Intel Core i3 or i5 processor. It is also equipped with an Intel HD 520 graphics card, 8GB of memory, and 512 GB of HDD. One may expect nine hours of battery life.

The S5, meanwhile, is a “top-of-the-line” laptop that offer a wider range of specifications designed for heavier applications. Sharing many common characteristics with the S3, S5 has a gigabit Ethernet, Wake-on-LAN ready and a higher battery life of 12 hours maximum.

On the other hand, the S7 boasts of a 9.98mm ultra-thin form factor, weighs 1.125 kg, and armed with a 4-cell battery pack, which the company claimed is capable of nine hours of battery juice. It has 256GB SSD.

The Aspire S7, which is “built for the hard-working class”, sports an all-metal chassis and is embedded with a dual-channel 8GB of on board LPDDR3 SDRAM, giving it the ability to transfer data double the speed of previous models. The company said it eats up very low power and emits less heat.

The Aspire S7 boasts of a 7th generation Intel Core i5-7Y54 processor, with an Intel HD Graphics 615 on its 13.3 inches display with IPS technology.

It has full HD 1920 x 1080, high-brightness Acer CineCrystal LED-backlit TFT LCD that is able to produces “flawless graphics and provides better resolution for screen viewing.”

For video conference, particularly for business, the process is made easier through the S7’s built-in HD webcam with 1280 x 720 resolution, 720p HD audio-video recording and high dynamic range (HDR) imaging.

Like every notebook, it is also built for Wi-Fi surfing and social network. Acer said, “ultra-fast wireless technology is featured. An 802.11ac wireless LAN with a 2×2 MU-MIMO technology can provide seamless connection on the web and with a Bluetooth 4.0 wireless connectivity to accessories will be hassle-free.”

It also comes with a USB Type-C port and supports DisplayPort over USB-C and DC-in, which are described as a revolution for a unified electric connectivity and USB technology.

The S7 has Windows 10 Home version in a 64-bit based processor to let the user enjoy the advantages of a 64-bit processing and the power of a 4GB or higher memory.
