Replacement of Samsung Note 7 starts in PH: Important details

Samsung Philippines will start replacing on Oct. 1 around 6,500 defective units of the Galaxy Note 7 smartphone that have been sold in the country.

In a small press briefing, the Korean firm also divulged crucial details about the issue and the recall process.

Number of Galaxy Note 7 sold: 2.5 million globally and 6,500 locally

Cause of the defect: ?Slight misalignment of positive and negative cathode of the battery that resulted in the insulation becoming insufficient.?

Number of reported cases: 90 in the US and 1 in the Philippines

Status of new Galaxy Note 7: Samsung said the issue has been fixed and the new units are already free from any defect.

Where to get replacement: In store or mobile operator where it was purchased or acquired. There are will also be pop-up locations in SM Mall of Asia and Megamall to assist consumers.

Can gray units be replaced: No because these are technically smuggled units. However, Samsung may accept if it is accompanied by an official receipt that it was bought abroad.

What will consumers get: Brand new Galaxy Note 7, Samsung gift coupon worth P1,000, and screen protector. Unlike the old units which had white icons, the new Galaxy Note 7 sports a green battery indicator.

What will happen if users don?t get a replacement: The old units can only be charged up to 60 percent via an over-the-air software update. Samsung will also ?bombard? the user with reminders and may even disable the phone.

Are new units dual SIM-capable: Not all. Samsung says it will deal with this issue on a case-to-case basis.

Can consumers buy the new Galaxy Note 7: Not at the moment.
