DOST, UP open scholarships on nanosatellite engineering program

The government has opened scholarship applications for the nanosatellite engineering track at the College of Engineering of the University of the Philippines-Diliman.

The program is under the Master of Science (MS) and Master of Engineering (MEng) in Electrical Engineering at the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Institute (EEEI). The scholarships are being offered by the Department of Science and Technology – Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI), in partnership with UPD.

Major activities in the nanosatellite engineering track include the development of 1U cube satellites (cubesats) at UPD-EEEI, space environment testing of the cubesats (engineering model and flight model) at the Kyushu Institute of Technology (Kyutech) in Japan, launch of the cubesats via the International Space Station, and cubesat operations.

The scholarship offers limited slots and only accepts a maximum of eight students per school year. Two cubesats are aimed to be developed and launched into space near the end of the program.

Deadline for applications for the first batch is on October 30, 2018, and the program starts on January 2019. The STEP-UP Project is also accepting inquiries and applications for admission for the January 2020 term.

The STEP-UP Project is one of the four component projects of the Space Technology and Applications Mastery, Innovation and Advancement (STAMINA4Space) Program funded by the DOST. It aims to utilize PHL-Microsat outputs and further small satellite technology in the country through research and development, capacity building of local researchers and scientists, and providing technical know-how.

Among its objectives are the establishment of a University Consortium on Space Science and Technology Applications, scholarships on nanosatellite engineering, and establishment of ground stations in partner universities to strengthen the Philippines? aerospace technology capabilities and emergency response.

For more information, you may contact the STEP-UP Project Secretariat at step-up@eee.upd.edu.ph or at (02) 981-8500 loc. 3305. Application requirements and procedure can be viewed and accessed here.
