Community marketplace mobile app Carousell announced a merger with buy-and-sell platform OLX. The two will combine each other’s features under a unified platform — Carousell.ph.

Carousell Philippines general manager Raffy Montemayor

Raffy Montemayor, Carousell Philippines general manager, said in an interview that the improved Carousell platform enhanced with OLX’s technology will go live on July 15. They will also be migrating OLX Philippine users to the new platform upon consent.

Users who do not migrate their accounts and listings to Carousell will find that after the target date, the platform and their accounts will be unavailable.

For current OLX users who are interested in joining Carousell.ph, all they have to do is sign in, go through the migration landing page, then link it to a pre-existing Carousell account or create a new one. All their account information and listings will then be reflected on the platform.

“We challenge ourselves to think about how can we help users sell items in only three seconds or less. We started investing in the technologies that could make this happen,” explained Montemayor.

With the improved platform, buyers and sellers can now leave feedback to each other after every successful transaction which can help resellers gain more credibility for their respective markets. One of the enablers that Carousell also invested in is AI-powered listings and machine learning.

Montemayor added, “Another thing that we’re doing with AI and machine learning is making it easier for our buyers to find what they’re looking for.”

With AI, the selling process is streamlined by the platform’s autosuggesting capabilities for categorizing, naming and pricing each item. Buyers can also just take or upload a picture of what they are searching for, especially for those who are not sure of the item’s details, and the platform will search for similar listings.

Posting items on the platform is also not capped, giving sellers a chance to post an unlimited number of products to gain visibility that leads to potential sales. Also part of the merger is Property24, a partner of OLX when it comes to real-estate and property selling.

“We’re only getting started and there’s a long way to go, but we’re investing in the right technologies to get us there so that we can always provide the leading classifieds experience in our region and in the Philippines,” Montemayor said.
