Chinese game developer NetEase Games has announced plans for its esports tournament brand Top Clans, which now has more than 57 million views and 80 competing teams across five game titles. This year, the tournaments will be taking a grassroots approach to engage amateur teams and discover more talents in countries like the Philippines, Vietnam, and other countries in Asia.
Overall, the first stage will include six qualifying tournaments with three for Standard and three for Battlegrounds. The Interschool Cup rounds are exclusively for teams currently enrolled in schools and universities in the Philippines while the Invitational qualifiers is where AKG will select team captains to form their teams that are not yet qualified in the next stage.
The combat system takes inspiration from traditional connect-3 puzzle games. By matching adjacent tiles with similar colors, players are able to activate their character’s attack, while more powerful skills are set off by matching more colored tiles. The Party Captain is the only character that attacks regardless if tiles are connected, while party members take advantage of elemental matching. There is also an additional auto-combat mode for casual gamers.
