Alipay+ expands cross-border payment options to Japan, Nepal

Ant International subsidiary Alipay+, renowned for its global mobile payment solutions, recently solidified its presence in Asia through partnerships with local QR payment operators in Japan and Nepal.

Announced by Douglas Feagin, president of Ant International, during the Singapore FinTech Festival held from Nov. 6 to 8, the move is aimed at enhancing economic growth in these countries by creating a global payment ecosystem that caters to both local businesses and international tourists.

The collaborations will enable Japan’s PayPay Corp. to integrate over three million local merchants into a unified payment network, facilitating seamless transactions across a range of services.

Likewise, the Nepal Clearing House Limited (NCHL), operator of NEPALPAY QR, is set to connect with over 875,000 local merchants.

The initiative presents a potential for unlocking global opportunities, particularly for small and medium enterprises (SMEs), which often face challenges in accessing international markets.

One of the key benefits of these partnerships is the expanded access to Alipay+’s global consortium of e-wallet users, which includes GCash. This integration opens avenues for cross-border digital payments, significantly enhancing transaction security and convenience for users.

For international travelers visiting Japan and Nepal, the ability to make payments through a familiar mobile wallet streamlines their experience, allowing them to explore more of these culturally rich destinations without the hassle of currency exchange or payment limitations.

The addition of Japan and Nepal brings Alipay+’s network to a total of 90 million merchants across 66 countries and regions, catering to 1.6 billion consumer accounts and collaborating with 35 mobile payment partners.

Feagin stated that “the simplicity of QR code payment is proving to be a game changer for the future of travel.”

He adds that Alipay+ and its partners has fueled economic growth by connecting local merchants to the growing demand of international consumers for hyper-local experiences, opening up the payment borders for the global tourism marketplace.
