The DICT stated on Wednesday, April 19, that it has received the request of the telcos to extend the SIM registration period but stressed that “at this point, there is no extension of SIM registration”.
According to data from Spectrum Effect, Smart now performs better than other operators in Asia Pacific, the Middle East and Africa, and Latin America, putting Smart’s performance at par with North American and European countries.
Globe said it has logged over 1.5 million SIM registrations as of Dec. 28, while Smart Communications said it has received close to 400,000 successful applications. Dito Telecommunity, meanwhile, said subscribers who successfully register their SIM cards will receive 2GB bonus data.

Smart Communications has cited a report from the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) suggesting that the personalized spam text messages proliferating recently could be the handiwork of scammers who mined subscriber data from GCash and Viber.
PLDT and its wireless unit Smart Communications have urged Internet users to be wary of websites they visit, especially those that require login credentials.
Dominant telcos Globe Telecom and Smart Communications are ready battle it out against upstart rival Dito Telecommunity at the Philippine Competition Commission (PCC) after the anti-trust agency said on Friday, Aug. 26, that it is opening an investigation based on the complaint filed by the Dennis Uy-owned operator.
Globe said it has already requested the NTC to temporarily disconnect the interconnection trunk lines between Globe and DITO over persistent fraudulent calls.
DITO has filed a complaint before the Philippine Competition Commission (PCC) against Globe Telecom and Smart Communications for their alleged abuse of their market dominance through interconnection woes.
