Globe Telecom chief information security officer Anton Bonifacio said their coordination with law enforcement agencies has led to the arrest and prosecution of text scammers.
Last Monday, the House Committee on Information and Communications Technology approved the SIM card registration bill as a rush of "personalized" text scams sent to mobile subscribers made it to the headlines.
The National Privacy Commission (NPC) said on Thursday, Sept. 1, that it is monitoring and investigating the proliferation of unsolicited text messages from anonymous numbers, with some containing the receiver’s names.
Globe Telecom, meanwhile, has warned the public about the dangers of over-the-top or OTT messaging platforms such as Viber and Facebook Messenger, which bypass mobile networks and evade SMS blocking.
Sen. Grace Poe said text scams have remained rampant despite efforts by the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) and telcos to warn the public against text scams and make them block or report the messages.
Recent undercover work by the telco’s cybersecurity operations team bared that the link found in newer text messages directs customers to a group chat in the messaging application WhatsApp.
