House OKs bill expanding coverage of S&T scholarship

The House of Representatives has approved on third and final reading a measure expanding the government’s Science and Technology (S&T) Scholarship Program to cover all graduating from high school in the country.

“A graduating high school student from any high school who may not belong to the top five percent of the graduating class but with exemplary grades in science and mathematics will soon be granted scholarship under the measure,” said Rep. Angelo Palmones (Party-list, Agham), one of the authors of House Bill 6860.

The bill co-authored by Rep. Winston Castelo (2nd District, Quezon City) seeks to amend the Science and Technology Act of 1994.

At present, Palmones said, the science and technology scholarship program covers only the top five students from science high schools.

“One good provision of this measure is that the scholarship grant is not limited to the graduates of a science high school and the top five students,” Palmones said.

Under the bill, science scholars are mandated to take courses that go along with the lines of priorities identified by the government, consistent with the prevailing and emerging industry and service sector requirements and priority investments, contained in the Philippine development plan.

Palmones said the measure would create the Science and Technology Scholarship Fund to be administered by the Science Education Institute (SEI) under the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).

Palmones said the scholarship fund would be used solely to finance the education of poor but deserving students.
