Hackings proof of need for gov?t Web host, says ICT Office

The ICT Office of the Department of Science and Technology said on Monday, Nov. 4, that the latest spate of defacement of government websites is only proving that the government has made the right move to create its own Web hosting facility.

ICT Office executive director Louis Casambre appealed to hackers, particularly those belonging to the hacktivist group Anonymous Philippines, not to stage a hacking spree just to promote their event, dubbed ?Million Mask March? on Tuesday, Nov. 5.

?Website defacements are still against the law and hackers who are proven to have violated Section 33 of RA 8792 or the E-Commerce Act will be liable for their actions,? Casambre said.

Websites of government agencies such as the Insurance Commission, Southern Philippines Development Authority, and the Optical Media Board, as well as those of the Municipality of Bolinao, Pasig City, Pateros, and the Municipality of Basnud, Oriental Mindoro were vandalized over the weekend.

In July 2013, President Aquino issued Administrative Order 39 that mandated government agencies to migrate to the Government Web Hosting Sevice (GWHS).

The hosting service and the Government Website Template (GWT) is under the Integrated Government Philippines (iGov Phil) project of the ICTO Office and Advanced Science and Technology Institute (ASTI).
