Filipino kids bagged a total of 62 medals consisting of 3 gold, 18 silver, and 41 bronze medals in the 10th International Mathematics and Science Olympiad (IMSO) for Primary School Students held in the Philippines from Nov. 25 to 29.
Stefan Marcus Ong and Steven Reyes of St. Jude Catholic School and John Henry Marquez of UP Integrated School won the country’s gold medals in math in the competition.
The international contest participated by students from South Africa, Thailand, Taiwan, Indonesia, China, India, Nigeria, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Kazakhstan, Brunei, Malaysia, and the Philippines.
The 10th IMSO was organized by the Mathematics Trainers Guild-Philippines (MTG) under Simon Chua and the City of Taguig in cooperation with the Department of Education (DepEd) and the Science Education Institute of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-SEI).
Cayetano and husband Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano, DOST-SEI officer-in-charge Elizabeth Fontanilla and MTG officers Isidro Aguilar, Eduardo dela Cruz and Rechilda Villame led in awarding the winners last Nov. 28 at the Samsung Hall of SM Aura Premier at Bonifacio Global City in Taguig.
In Math, Xinyi Chen of Singapore emerged as the overall top scorer while Master Papon Lapate of Thailand was best in exploration, and Yu Chi Zhang of Singapore took home the best in theory award.
In Science, Kar Weng Sean Leong of Singapore won as the overall winner and Bowen Jiang of Singapore was best in experiment. Disanayaka Mudiyanselage Uvindu Praveen Sumanasekara of Sri Lanka was best in theory.
Thailand took home 11 gold, 13 silver and 3 bronze medals while Singapore won 8 gold and 4 silver medals. Sri Lanka bagged 4 gold, 7 silver and 8 bronze medals and Indonesia scooped 3 gold, 10 silver and 6 bronze medals.
Taiwan bagged 3 silver and 8 bronze medals while South Africa won 2 silver and 12 bronze medals. Malaysia grabbed 2 silver and 5 bronze medals while China and Kazakhstan won 2 bronze medals each.
