Samsung seeks to tighten grip on PH market with ‘boosted’ Galaxy A series

Mobile communications giant Samsung is seeking to further boost its hold of the local market with the recent release of its new line of smartphones.

Samsung is generally recognized as among the top 3 mobile phone vendors in the Philippines, and the top vendor globally.

Samsung bared its “boosted” smartphone line which the company claims will be suited for “Gen Z” user wanting to be always “live” or in the “now.” The company describes the Gen Z as a market segment that is fond of producing and sharing content with their friends.

Jerry Manus, Samsung Philippines unit head for IT and mobile, said the new generation phones are “upgraded versions” of earlier smartphones under the Galaxy A series.

“During the first half of the year, we launched the Galaxy A series range and we are still quite amazed about its success here in the market,” Manus said.

The new boosted Galaxy A series, Manus said are an upgrade of the previous Galaxy A series. The new series will focus on features that “Filipinos want the most.” These features, the executive said, include a “high quality camera, long-lasting battery, and immersive display.”

Manus added that “Samsung wants to continuously innovate, as the mobile phone usages of Filipino consumers continue to evolve.

The new Galaxy A50s, which sits atop the new mid-range phones in terms of specifications, sports a triple camera and a 6.4-inch Super AMOLED display.

According to Samsung, “AMOLED” stands for Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diodes and is a type of OLED display used in smartphones. The difference is that Super AMOLED has an integrated touch function and instead of having a layer that recognizes touch on the top of the screen, the layer is integrated into the screen itself.

The A50s, with a price tag of P18,990, is powered by an octa-core Exynos 9610 processor (2.3GHz + Quad 1.7GHz), a 6GB RAM and 128GB of onboard memory. It can support up to 512GB if paired with a micro-SD card.

It has face recognition capabilities and an in-display fingerprint scanner. A fast-charging 4,000mAh battery is standard, and the A50s weighs a relatively light 166 grams.

Aside from the A50s, Samsung also unveiled the new A30s, the A20s, and A10s. Notably, the lower-end products do not have some of the features of the A50s, including a faster processor and 48 megapixel camera.

Samsung said pre-orders are now being accepted for the new Galaxy A series line.
