DOST opens first Advanced Manufacturing Center in Zamboanga

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) has inaugurated the first Advanced Manufacturing Center (AMCen) in the Zamboanga Peninsula, a move seen to boost innovation and research in Western Mindanao.

The facility, established through the DOST-Metals Industry Research and Development Center (MIRDC), DOST Region IX, and the Regional Innovation Center for Metals and Engineering (RICME) of Western Mindanao State University (WMSU), was unveiled during the Regional Science, Technology, and Innovation Week and HANDA Pilipinas – Mindanao Leg at the Palacio Del Sur.

The Zamboanga center is the ninth AMCen nationwide and the first in the peninsula. It is equipped with advanced 3D printing technology for rapid prototyping, initially using plastics, with plans to expand into metal-based applications in partnership with DOST-MIRDC’s central office in Taguig City.

“This is the only facility of its kind in the region,” said Engr. Kevin Marc Bejerano of RICME. “We aim not only to support micro, small, and medium enterprises but also to advance research among faculty, industry partners, and especially our students.”

Students from WMSU are already using the center’s 3D printers for thesis projects and prototype designs. Bejerano noted that while intricate designs pose challenges, the center’s team, with support from the national AMCen office, is helping researchers and industries develop viable outputs.

DOST officials underscored the long-term benefits of the facility, which include strengthening the region’s technological capabilities and human capital.

“This is not just a center for WMSU but for the whole of Western Mindanao,” said DOST secretary Renato Solidum Jr.

AMCen is envisioned to accelerate prototype development, provide proof-of-concept support, and offer training for both students and professionals.

DOST-MIRDC executive director Robert O. Dizon said the center will help build local capacity in advanced manufacturing and foster stronger links between academia and industry.
