Apple unveils AirPods Max 2 with H2 chip, improved noise cancellation

Apple has introduced the second-generation AirPods Max, bringing its premium over-ear headphones in line with newer AirPods models through the addition of the H2 chip and a set of AI-driven audio features.

The update marks the first major refresh of the AirPods Max since their initial release in 2020, with Apple focusing on improved sound processing, smarter audio modes, and better noise control.

At the core of the upgrade is the H2 chip, which powers enhanced computational audio and enables active noise cancellation (ANC) that Apple says is up to 1.5 times more effective than the previous generation.

The company also updated its Transparency mode to deliver more natural ambient sound using a redesigned signal processing system and microphone array.

The headphones also gain support for 24-bit, 48kHz lossless audio when connected via USB-C, targeting both general users and music creators who require higher-fidelity sound.

Spatial audio has likewise been refined, with improvements in instrument separation and overall audio clarity.

New intelligent features such as Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, and Live Translation are also included, extending capabilities previously limited to Apple’s in-ear AirPods lineup.

“With the incredible performance of H2, AirPods Max are upgraded with up to 1.5x more effective ANC for the ultimate all-day listening experience,” said Eric Treski, Apple’s director of audio product marketing.

“The sound quality is remarkably clean, rich, and acoustically detailed — and when combined with capabilities like Personalized Spatial Audio, AirPods Max 2 deliver a profoundly immersive experience.”

AirPods Max 2 will be available in five colors — midnight, starlight, orange, purple, and blue — with pre-orders starting March 25 in select markets and retail availability expected in April.
