Hontiveros seeks probe into Roblox over child safety risks

Sen. Risa Hontiveros has filed a resolution seeking an investigation into online gaming platforms such as Roblox, citing potential risks to children and the need for stronger safeguards.

In filing Proposed Senate Resolution (PSR) No. 357, Hontiveros called on the Senate Committee on Women, Children, Family Relations and Gender Equality to conduct an inquiry in aid of legislation into the operations of online gaming platforms and their impact on minors.

The senator raised concerns over reports that children may be exposed to harmful content, exploitation, and inappropriate interactions within these platforms, which have grown in popularity among young users.

Hontiveros said there is a need to examine whether existing regulations are sufficient to protect minors in increasingly immersive digital environments. She is pushing for possible policy measures, including stronger age verification systems and tighter monitoring of online interactions involving children.

“Effective regulation of online platforms must balance child protection,” Hontiveros said, stressing the need to ensure safety without unduly restricting access to digital spaces.

The proposed probe also aims to assess the accountability of platform operators and determine whether additional legislation is needed to address emerging risks linked to online gaming ecosystems.

Platforms such as Roblox allow users to create and interact in virtual environments, making them highly engaging but also raising concerns over user-generated content and potential abuse.
