Apple Pay is now available in the Philippines, allowing users to make contactless and online payments through their iPhone, Apple Watch, iPad, and Mac.
At launch, the payment service supports eligible credit and debit cards issued by Chinabank, GoTyme Bank, Metrobank, and UnionBank. Users will retain the rewards and benefits provided by their cards, according to Apple.
“The Philippines is home to a digital-first generation that is rapidly embracing a vision for a cashless future, all while expecting security and privacy at every step,” said Jennifer Bailey, Apple’s vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet.
“Apple Pay makes everyday payments simple, secure, and seamless — whether users are shopping in stores or online — with no need to open another app. We’re thrilled to bring Apple Pay to users in the Philippines, making it easier than ever to pay with the privacy and security they expect from the devices they love.”
Apple Pay can be used at participating stores equipped with contactless payment terminals. Users double-click the side or Home button, authenticate through Face ID or Touch ID, and hold their iPhone or Apple Watch near the reader.
The service is also available for purchases in supported apps and websites through an iPhone, iPad, or Mac, removing the need to repeatedly enter card, contact, shipping, and billing information.
Participating merchants include Abenson, Anko, Ayala Malls, Beyond the Box, Coach, Foot Locker, Globe, HOKA, Jollibee, Power Mac Center, Rustan’s, Shake Shack, Smart, and WalterMart Supermarket.
Apple Pay is also being offered on the apps and websites of foodpanda, Jollibee, Rustan’s, and Shopee. Maya Business will begin enabling the payment service for more than 5,000 online merchants.
Apple said some participating banks will allow customers to apply for virtual cards through their apps or websites. Once issued, the cards can be added immediately to Apple Pay.
For security, Apple Pay does not store a user’s actual credit or debit card number on the device or Apple’s servers. It instead assigns an encrypted Device Account Number that is stored in the device’s Secure Element.
Apple said it also does not retain transaction information that can be linked to an individual user. Payments may be suspended through the Find My app if an iPhone is lost or stolen.
Apple Pay is available in more than 90 countries and regions and works with over 11,000 banking partners worldwide.
