First house in PH made entirely of plastic unveiled by DOST

The Philippines has showcased its first prototype house built from radiation-processed plastic materials, marking a new milestone in the country’s effort to turn plastic waste into durable construction products.

Unveiled by the Department of Science and Technology–Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (DOST-PNRI), the model house features tiles, bricks, and panels created through a radiation-based technology that strengthens low-value plastic waste — particularly sachets, one of the country’s most persistent pollutants.

DOST Secretary Renato U. Solidum Jr. said the prototype demonstrates how nuclear science can offer “innovative yet realistic solutions” to plastic pollution.

He cited the country’s progress under the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) NUTEC Plastics initiative, which promotes the use of nuclear technology in monitoring, reducing, and upcycling plastic waste.

The Philippines is one of nine pilot countries leading NUTEC Plastics’ upcycling component.

Under the Post-Radiation Reactive Extrusion (PREx) project, DOST-PNRI researchers apply radiation — via electron beam or gamma rays — to modify the molecular bonds of plastic waste, producing stronger, more durable construction materials.

“Many of these plastics come from sachets. They are treated with radiation… which enables stronger bonds,” PNRI director Carlo A. Arcilla said.

“Without radiation, even if you heat the plastic, it will not be very sustainable.”

He stressed that the process does not make plastics radioactive, making the materials safe for use.

Solidum added that the technology not only supports circular-economy goals but also opens potential livelihood opportunities.

“We want people to see plastic not as trash, but as money,” he said. “If you see value in it, you won’t throw it away.”

The PREx model house was displayed at the DOST-PNRI compound during the first visit of IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi on November 26, coinciding with the inaugural International High-Level Forum on NUTEC Plastics held in Pasay City.

The PREx initiative is among several DOST programs aimed at advancing science-driven solutions in human well-being, economic growth, environmental protection, and sustainability under the agency’s OneDOST4U framework.
