DICT chief denies resignation rumors amid online speculation

Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) secretary Henry Aguda has denied reports circulating online claiming that he had resigned from his post, following a wave of social media posts speculating about an impending leadership change at the agency.

Among those who posted about the rumored reshuffle was lawyer and social media personality Jesus Falcis, who claimed on Facebook that several DICT officials had allegedly begun packing their belongings in preparation for the supposed appointment of former presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda as DICT secretary.

The post was widely shared online and fueled speculation of a possible Cabinet reshuffle involving the DICT.

Aguda, however, rejected the claims and said he remains in office.

“I deny the false reports and speculations that I have resigned from my position as Secretary of the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT),” Aguda said in a statement.

The DICT chief said the rumors reflect the continuing spread of disinformation online, adding that the department has been actively pursuing efforts against fake news and online misinformation.

“The DICT has been steadfast in its efforts to combat disinformation and the spread of fake news, and this latest rumor is yet another example of how false narratives can be weaponized to sow confusion and undermine public trust,” he said.

Aguda also linked the attacks to the agency’s recent digital transformation initiatives.

“While unfortunate, these attacks are unsurprising given the Department’s recent gains and successes in pushing meaningful digital transformation initiatives that directly benefit the Filipino people,” he added.

He said he continues to serve “at the pleasure of the President” and remains committed to the department’s programs.

“The DICT remains focused on the important work ahead in accelerating digital transformation, expanding connectivity, and ensuring that digitalization initiatives translate into meaningful and inclusive benefits for all,” Aguda said.
