The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) has launched the first phase of the Mindanao Integrated Government Network (MIGN), extending the National Fiber Backbone Project to key government facilities across Mindanao.
According to the DICT, approximately 500 government agencies and facilities in Cagayan de Oro, Butuan, Davao City, Koronadal, and Pagadian have been connected to the network.
The infrastructure forms part of the National Fiber Backbone, a government-led project designed to provide a secure, high-speed communications network linking public institutions nationwide.
Among the agencies connected to the network are the Department of Education (DepEd), Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), and the Office of Civil Defense (OCD).
The DICT said the project is expected to improve coordination among government offices, enable faster sharing of data, and support the delivery of digital services. It added that around 5.3 million Filipinos may indirectly benefit from the expanded connectivity.
The agency also highlighted the network’s role in disaster management, noting that improved communications infrastructure could help government offices coordinate emergency response efforts during typhoons, floods, earthquakes, and other disasters.
DICT secretary Henry Aguda said the project aims to improve both government operations and public service delivery.
“Connectivity is not just convenience, it is a lifeline. It is coordination, safety, and faster response when every second matters. This is the real promise: not just better technology, but better service. Not just faster internet, but faster response to people’s needs,” Aguda said.
The launch represents the latest phase of the National Fiber Backbone Project, which seeks to establish a nationwide government communications network connecting agencies across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.
